Learning From Failures

Regardsless of how bitter this defeat is, I have now learned a lot...

Expectations vs Time

To be blantely honest, I thought I had far more time to make this project than I actually needed. My expectations were far too high compared to how well this simulation turned out to be. I can regret this mistake all I want, but at the end of the day the only right thing to do, is to learn from this and do better planning next time.

Approach

The way I approached this task, seems to have failed me as well... I chose to make it a normal game at first with a simple OVRCameraRig. This seemed like a good option at first since it would 'simplify' the process of making the simulation, and not just jumping in to the deep end of the VR creating at first. Oh how wrong I was... I completely botched the simplification, by trying to make an actual flying plane, with near realistic physical properties, and thereafter adding VR controls to it. The absolute time I overlooked that it would take to make an almost 1:1 realistic flight in Unity, is absolutely baffling. To further put salt into the wound, the amount of work it takes to swap a controller from keyboard inputs, to VR was far more complicated in this project than I anticipated, and I wish I had given it more thought before hand.

Expectations

    • I had in mind there would be a start menu where the user could chosse from 2 different airplanes, since I already have another prefab ready for that.
    • A death scene when the user dies, they can choose to replay in the same airplane, or go back to the main menu.
    • The final thing I wanted to add was an invisible wall surrounding the environment, so that the user cannot fly out of the given area they spawn in, here being the only area that has been made so far.

    Future plans

For me personally, I have learned that I need to plan a project better before starting, to make sure I minimize the risk of opstacles like I just have experienced.

For the simulation, I genuienly want to put in the time to finish this project and even add more, since it was truly a great experience and I clearly still have a lot, and I truly want to learn this.
