Flight Simulator for VR


Inspiration:

Wanting to be a fighter pilot when I was younger, and this seems like the perfect time to start a simple project for a slice of that dream.


Reasoning behind idea:

  • Flying airplanes requires a lot of practice.
  • It is not easily available or cheap to just fly an airplane.
  • It can be dangoures if something goes wrong whilst flying an airplane.


Concept:

To teach people how to fly an airplane through the usage of VR. The player will sit in a chair, and by having a VR-headset on they will see it as if they are in the cockpit of an airplane. There are of course a large amount of different types of pilots, therefore the application will provide a large amount of different types of airplanes for the user to choose between, in regards to what type of pilot they strive to become. Each airplane will respond differently, since airplanes are not all of the same weight, shape or power.


Functions:

User sits and puts on VR-headset. The user then sees an opening menu, where they can choose what type of airplane they want to fly, and maybe be able to see different information about the airplanes. After choosing the airplane, the user will find themselves in the cockpit of the selected airplane. From the cockpit the user will have to turn on the aiplane, and the make it take off. Whilst flying the airplane, the user will be set to do some given tasks, or just fly around freely, until they are to land the airplane again.


Art:

So far I have found two free to use 3D assets, and hopfully they will be usable for this project.

I have decided to build the terrain myself, since it is a fairly easy task to do in Unity.
