Introduction

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen and Treasure Planet, the AR application is meant to bring the wonderful stories of H.C. Andersen to life, for both kids and adults to enjoy. An interactive book, that brings the characters to life, as you go through the different stories there are to be enjoyed.

Description

The interface makes the story come to life, whilst the user is either reading or listening through the stories of H.C. Andersen. In this very small version of the application, the user only gets to experience very small bits of the specific story The Little Mermaid.

The significance of the shown part of the application, is that it will be more captivating for the user, and thereby making them indulge more in the story. They might even feel like they’re almost in the story itself.

The reason it’s AR is so that it’s a physical book the user is sitting with, and the magical feeling of something traditionally only consisting of words, and sometimes pictures, can come to life and move around before your very eyes.

Interaction Design

It’s important that the users can choose for themselves, whether they want a narrator or if they want to read the book on their own. It can seem distracting with moving objects whilst reading, however it is always nice to have the option for yourself.

As seen and described in the itch.io devlog post the picture from Treasure Planet depicts how the user would use the book. The book would open, and the story would come to life, making it even more captivating and exciting than it already was.

The buttons are both meant to make sure the user can have choice, but also pause and continue the story as they wish. Unfortunately, the buttons can only play the story from the beginning once they are pressed. Therefore, leaving an unsatisfactory impression of what could have been a great example of the project.

I truly wanted to make this project something special but ended up trying to overcomplicate it. After many hours wasted, by staring myself blind in this project, I ended up with something less than I had in mind.

Technical development

The interface technology used is a mobile device, therefore a touch screen and a camera are both necessary for the use of this application.

Click the buttons at the bottom of your screen to hear the story and show the camera the pictures to see the 3D figures.

Description of 3D models

There is a 3D model of Hans Christian Andersen himself. A 3D model of the little mermaid as she is naturally, and a 3D model depicting the little mermaid, as she has turned into a human girl.
